The 28th Population Forum: Behavioral Characteristics of Marriage and Childbearing and Their Policy Implications

KIHASA held the 28th Population Forum, "Behavioral Characteristics of Marriage and Childbearing and Their Policy Implications-Based on the Family and Fertility Survey in 2021," on Thursday, October 13, 2022. This forum was live-streamed on KIHASA's official YouTube channel.

The forum was opened with KIHASA president Tae Soo Lee's welcoming remarks and congratulated on by Jin-kyeong Park, deputy-secretary general of the Presidential Committee on Aging Society and Population Policy. There were five topic presentations that shedded light on the key characteristics of recent marriage and childbearing behaviors with a view to coming up with policy responses to Korea's rapidly chaning demography:

  • "Key characteristics of marriage behaviors and their policy implications," Jongseo Park, research fellow, KIHASA

  • "Analysis of the relationship between the caracteristics of the parents' generation and children's marriage and childbearing behaviors: Comparison by birth cohort and policy implications," Insu Chang, associate research fellow, KIHASA

  • "Women's health in pregnancy and childbirth and its impact on their intention to have additional children," So-young Lee, research fellow, KIHASA

  • "The relationship between living with parents and inter-generational resources transfer," Sung-young Choi, associate research fellow, KIHASA

  • "The effects of unmarried men and women's potential patterns of gender role values on their perceptions of marriage and childbirth," Ji-young Im, senior researcher, KIHASA

Following the presentations, four experts participated in the roundtable discussion, presided by Jong-hoon Kim, research fellow of KIHASA, including Bong-oh Kye, professor of Kookmin University, Isun Kim, researcher of the SNU Social Development Research Center, Jeong-rim Hong, associate research fellow of the Korea Labor Institute, and Young-jun Choi, director of fertility policy at the Ministry of Health and Wefare.


This forum looked into the key characteristics of marriage and fertility behaviors based on the Family and Fertility Survey in 2021, which is conducted regularly every 3 years by KIHASA, and drew some policy implications.
