Have you heard of ‘panel surveys’?

A panel survey is a type of longitudinal study that follows the same sample group, or panel, over time to analyze changes within the group.

The main purpose of a panel survey is to track changes in the subjects over the years. For example, the Korean Welfare Panel Study follows the panel households each year to monitor changes in their income, employment, and overall well-being. The survey findings are then used as evidence to inform welfare policy.

However, panel surveys present some inherent challenges. Since the same households and individuals are tracked year after year, follow-ups can become difficult if some members age, pass away, move , or drop out due to fatigue from repeated surveys, resulting in what is known as “panel attrition.”

Therefore, panel surveys require continuous efforts and adjustments to ensure high-quality results, such as preserving the panels’ representativeness and designing appropriate question weights. Having contributed to policy-making by capturing changes in people’s living conditions, the Korean Welfare Panel Study prompts the question: what more can be done in the future?
