Have you heard of social indicators?
Social indicators are statistical measures that reflect the level of welfare and quality of life in a society. They enable a more comprehensive and focused understanding of social conditions that are difficult to capture using economic indicators alone, such as GDP.
These indicators typically cover areas that are closely linked to people’s well-being, such as health, education, leisure, and housing.
As of 2023, Korea’s social indicators consist of 12 categories and a total of 270 statistical tables, all of which are easily accessible on the “Jipyonuri” (Indicators Portal) website.
But why do countries produce and monitor social indicators? The primary reason is to provide the data needed to formulate and evaluate social policies, with the ultimate goal of guiding social change in a desirable direction.
What strategies does Korea have in place to enhance its social indicators and, in turn, support its community social security policies more effectively?
