Health and Social Welfare Review Achieves Top 1% in '2023 KCI Citation Index Evaluation'

  • Ranked No. 1 in the Social Sciences General category for two consecutive years

  • Ranked 8th out of 2,847 journals, demonstrating high academic credibility with a self-citation rate of 4.6%

  • KCI Impact Factor improved by more than 1.5 times over the past five years

KIHASA has announced that its publication, the Health and Social Welfare Review, achieved the following in the 2023 KCI Citation Index Evaluation: No. 1 in the Social Sciences General category for the second consecutive year; No. 8 out of 1,032 journals in the Social Sciences field; and No. 8 out of 2,847 journals overall.

The 2023 KCI Citation Index measures the citation level of academic journals based on data from articles cited in 2023 from over 2,800 journals registered with KCI (Korea Citation Index).

  • The KCI Citation Index is a key indicator reflecting the quality of academic journals and is widely used by scholars and researchers to assess the reliability and impact of these journals.

The Health and Social Welfare Review also achieved the same ranking in the impact factor excluding self-citations, ranking 1st in the Social Sciences General category, 8th in the Social Sciences field, and 8th overall in the KCI.

  • The average self-citation rate among all KCI journals is about 23%, meaning that roughly a quarter of all citations are within the same journal.

  • However, the Health and Social Welfare Review has a self-citation rate of only 4.6%, with over 95% of its citations coming from other journals. This indicates that the research published in the Health and Social Welfare Review is recognized for its academic significance and credibility.

Additionally, the KCI Impact Factor of the Health and Social Welfare Review has improved by more than 1.5 times over the past five years, from 2.39 in 2019 to 3.58 in 2023.

  • Considering that the Impact Factor in the Social Sciences General category increased only slightly from 1.06 to 1.28 during the same period, it is clear that the academic influence of the Health and Social Welfare Review within the domestic academic community has significantly increased.

Acting President Kang Hye-kyu said, "For over 40 years, the Health and Social Welfare Review has made significant contributions in various fields such as healthcare, social welfare, population studies, and labor." She added, "We will continue to strive to produce research outcomes that contribute to academia and society through ongoing research and collaboration."

Since its first publication in 1981, the Health and Social Welfare Review has been a leading journal in interdisciplinary research encompassing theories and policies in population, health, social, and economic fields. It is a journal of the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, introducing policy-related issues in areas such as healthcare, social welfare, social security, low birthrate, aging, and health and welfare.
